The Best Oatmeal Toppings for Fall
I have written about oatmeal several times on this blog! It is my favorite breakfast during Fall and Winter. I love it cooked on the stovetop, as granola, or as overnight oats! A bowl of warm oats hits the spot after a crisp morning walk and keeps me full until lunch. Some may say oats can get repetitive but I experiment with different oatmeal toppings as often as possible!
One of the best things about oats is how versatile the toppings can be! They can be sweet or savory! For example, I’ve had oats mixed with some delicious goat cheese and topped with sauteed kale and a soft-boiled egg! While that was a delicious combo, I must admit that I am a sweet oats girl all the way! The three topping combos below are my favorite for this time of year! If you try them out, I have a feeling they will become your favorite too!
The Best Oatmeal Toppings for Fall
For my morning oats, I use any old fashioned oats I have on hand and follow the instructions on the container. The only thing I add differently is flaxseed meal. Flaxseed helps with digestive health and may also help lower cholesterol according to the Mayo Clinic. I use the preground flaxseed meal from Bob’s Red Mill! You can’t taste it at all and it helps as a thickener too! I also use half a cup of water and half a cup of milk (any kind will do) as I think this helps make the oats creamy and delish!
The sweetener for all of these versions of oats is maple syrup but you can use whatever you have on hand. I love to use honey or bananas if I don’t have syrup on hand. To add to the satiation factor, I like to add a protein source of some kind as well as you will see in each of these combinations!
Pumpkin Pie
To kick things off, I am bringing you the quintessential Fall flavor of pumpkin pie! I mix the oats with maple syrup and a sprinkle of pumpkin pie spice. If I had pumpkin puree I would have added a few tablespoons of that as well. Top it off with pumpkin seeds and you have a delicious and filling breakfast to set you up for the day!
Apple & Peanut Butter with Cinnamon
A Granny Smith apple with peanut butter and cinnamon is one of my favorite snacks! It just so happens that this combination makes the perfect oatmeal topping as well! I actually stir the peanut butter into the oats after it has softened a bit and become melty. This particular morning, I added cut up apple but it is also delicious to throw the cut up apples in a saucepan and let them reduce with the syrup and cinnamon! So yummy!
Carrot Cake
I am not a cake person. The only exception I make is for funfetti cake and carrot cake! I just helped my dad harvest a ton of carrots from his garden last week and he let me bring some home! This created the perfect opportunity for carrot cake oats! I shred the carrot and chop a handful of walnuts into smaller pieces. Add them to the oats with the cinnamon, vanilla extract, and raisins and there you have it! Raisins are totally optional but highly recommended! Unfortunately, I didn’t have any raisins this day but it still tasted delicious!
