4 Reasons You Should Start a Garden

Gardening is easily one of my favorite things to do. When I first saw this house, the thing that made me want it was the backyard space. It was beautifully landscaped, there was space to grow vegetables, and the patio was shaded in the afternoon! Our backyard is one of my favorite places to hang out and since moving in, I have learned so much about the various plants we have around the yard. It gives me such an appreciation for the landscaping and how peaceful it makes our backyard feel.

Every time I walk out there or am doing yard work, I feel grateful to have this space. I wish everyone could have a space like ours. So, if you’re on the fence about starting a garden, here are 4 reasons that you should!

4 Reasons You Should Start a Garden

Community

I could talk about gardening all day every day. I have recently joined some gardening groups on Facebook and have already learned a lot from other gardeners in my area! This is what I love about the gardening community, it seems like everyone is willing to help out no matter what skill level gardener you are! I love to see what other gardeners are growing and what their spaces look like. It’s a fun way to meet like-minded people and get answers to your questions!

Physical Health

The physical health benefits of starting a garden are numerous. I consider gardening and yardwork to be great forms of exercise! I definitely feel it after a day of work in the garden. Stretching before and after is something I try to do in order to help my muscles recover. If you are growing your own produce, you have the added benefit of fresh veggies or fruits to enhance your family’s meals throughout the season!

Continuous Learning

One of the things that I love most about gardening is how much I learn every year! There is always something new to learn or discover. My favorite way to learn is by doing and the garden is the perfect classroom for me. I have not only learned gardening skills but I have also learned to trust my instincts, the art of patience, and that a homegrown tomato is possibly the best thing in the world to eat! I love how the garden challenges me and then rewards my efforts with its beauty!

Mental Health/Stress Relief

My garden is my happy place. Even if I am out pulling weeds or raking leaves, it is a place for me to go for stress relief. May is Mental Health Awareness Month and alongside therapy, the garden has been the best thing for my mental health. If I am having a stressful day, all I have to do is head out to my garden and I feel instant calm. My shoulders relax, my breathing deepens, and my mood lifts. Suddenly it feels like my troubles are more manageable. Seeing the beautiful flowers or the delicious veggies and herbs takes my mind off of whatever is bothering me. I am so happy to have found such passion in the garden!
