DIY Halloween Decorations: Ghost Sign

I think this is my favorite project that I’ve done for this #Blogtober! You already know how much I am loving decorating with ghosts this year! I was able to make it using supplies that I already had on hand. The only thing I had to purchase was a new blade for our jigsaw. This project is definitely more involved than some of the others that I am featuring this month, but the extra time made it so worth it. It’s not difficult per se but you definitely will need some extra tools that aren’t generally found in your crafting supplies. I love how this little ghost sign turned out! Here’s how I did it!

Supplies:

  • Thin plywood cut into small rectangular pieces. 6 pieces in all mine started as 11×10 inch squares
  • Jigsaw
  • Orbital sander or sandpaper
  • White and Black acrylic paint
  • Wood glue
  • Clamps

Steps:

  1. I cut my little plywood squares in half using a miter box. A skill saw or table saw would have been easier but we don’t have those.
  2. Trace a curve onto each piece of wood a varied heights.
  3. Clamp the pieces to a stable surface one at a time and using the jigsaw, cut along the curve.
  4. Once all the pieces are cut out, use an orbital sander to sand the curves and the sides of each piece smooth. You can also hand sand each piece but this will take much longer.
  5. Paint each piece white. I did 2 coats covering the sides and the front.
  6. Using a pencil, trace a little ghost face on each piece. I did a Google search for different ideas.
  7. Paint the faces using the black acrylic paint.
  8. Once the paint is dry, lay out each ghost how you want them. Be sure to layer some ghosts on top. I did the three tallest on the bottom layer and 3 on the top layer.
  9. Using the wood glue, attach the top layer of ghosts to the bottom. Clamp the pieces together and allow them to dry completely. I used clamps across the bottom and then laid 2 heavy objects across the top for maximum pressure.
