DIY Halloween Decor: Birdhouse Makeover

I love feeding the birds in my backyard! In recent years I have bought a few birdhouses so that they can make nests in various spots of the backyard. This one is from Home Goods and I love how cute it is! The only problem is…I put it outside and it started to weather really quickly. I brought it back in and it has been sitting in my craft supplies waiting for me to figure out what I wanted to do with it.

When I started planning #blogtober for this year, I wanted to reduce my spending on decor significantly. One way I have done this is by using things that I already have and the idea to makeover this birdhouse was born. It was a Spring/Summer house so I have updated it to a Fall house! I don’t think these are currently available at Home Goods but if you do find a birdhouse somewhere, I hope this inspires you to give it a facelift! Here’s how I did it!

It should also be noted that this will NOT be going outside!

DIY Halloween Decorations: Birdhouse Makeover

Supplies:

  • Birdhouse of any kind (This one is similar to what you can find at Home Goods in Spring)
  • Acrylic paint & paintbrushes
  • Floral moss
  • Beads
  • Other Fall or Halloween decorations

Steps:

I started off by removing the little foliage from the little flower boxes and from the trellis that was on the side of the house. I made sure to save the longer greenery pieces to makeover later on, removing the little faux flowers.

Next, I painted the roof and the awnings of the birdhouse black. Basically, anything that was yellow on the original birdhouse I covered in black paint. It took about two coats on the yellow parts. I made sure to wait for the paint to dry between coats for optimal coverage.

For the shutters and the blue part of the original door, I mixed up a burnt orange color. I used my bright orange and mixed a tiny amount of black with it. I also mixed some of the orange with more black to create a brown color which I used to paint the little door knob, the trellis on the side, and dry brush onto the greenery that I saved.

Finishing touches…

With the greenery, I also layered some of the burnt orange color and bright orange color to give the pieces some texture and life. Once they were dry, I shortened them and hot-glued them back onto the trellis.

For the front of the house, I used some floral moss and hot glued it into the flower boxes. I love the texture the moss adds. But, I thought the front looked a little plain so I decided to make some cute pumpkins to attach to the front. I used some wooden beads from the Dollar Tree and painted them orange. Using a black pen I drew on the little jack-o-lantern faces. Then, I attached them to the front of the house.

For the stems, I used a bamboo skewer. I painted one brown, cut it down into small pieces, added hot glue to the ends of each piece, and stuck them down into each bead. The little bead pumpkins were just what the birdhouse needed to add a bit of character! I am so pleased with how this project turned out!
