DIY Halloween Decor: Haunted House Luminary

One of my favorite things to decorate with for the holidays is lights. I love the cozy glow that can be achieved with a string of lights or the glow of a candle. One thing I have enjoyed making in years past is a luminary. In the past, I have made them with glass hurricane containers from the dollar store and aluminum cans but this year I saw this cute MDF piece from the dollar store and knew I wanted to make a new variation on a luminary! Keep reading for how I made this one come to life!

DIY Halloween Decorations: Haunted House Luminary

Supplies:

  • Haunted House MDF cutout (Mine is from the dollar tree but you could also create your own using cardboard)
  • Tissue Paper (yellow is ideal but I painted mine with watercolor)
  • Watercolor
  • Black acrylic paint
  • Elmers Glue
  • Tumbling Tower blocks (really anything that will allow you to attach the house to a base)
  • Black foam board or plastic poster board for the base
  • Hot Glue Gun & Hot Glue
  • Black Pen
  • String of fairy lights

Steps:

  1. Paint the MDF and several tumbling tower blocks with black acrylic paint. If required, paint a section of the tissue paper with yellow watercolor.
  2. Once the house and the tissue paper are dry, flip the house over, cut out squares of the yellow tissue paper, and glue them over the windows and doors of the house.
  3. Using a black fine-tip marker, draw the designs on the windows.
  4. Create the house supports with the tumbling tower blocks. Hot glue two together along the long flat side and then hot glue a third along the long thin side of one of the other blocks to create a little step.
  5. Attach the tumbling tower block steps to the back of the base of the house using hot glue. Make sure the two-block stack is the part that is attached to the house.
  6. Cut out a base using a black plastic poster board. Make sure to measure the width of the house and make sure there is an inch extra on each end and then 3 inches on either side of the house
  7. Using hot glue, attach the house to the base.
  8. Tape your string of lights to the back of the house, making sure to focus around the windows.
  9. Light it up and admire!
