DIY Halloween Decor: Ghostie Pillow
I love a good holiday throw pillow. They are the ultimate cozy decoration and I have quite the collection going. I don’t, however, love the cost associated with them. If I am honest, I would rather spend my money on other types of decor and I find it hard to justify the price they are going for. At this point, I won’t buy a pillow unless it’s on sale but this year I decided to make my own!
I dusted off my trusty Singer sewing machine that I’ve had since college and got to work. This project can easily be done with fabric glue or by hand sewing but, the machine makes it a lot quicker and I think a better quality final result. I also didn’t use a pattern, I kind of made it up as I went. So, if you want a different shape, customize it however you see fit! Continue reading to see how I made this adorable pillow!
DIY Halloween Decor: Ghostie Pillow
Supplies:
- 2 white fabric quarters and 1 black fabric quarter (You can get these at Dollar Tree or near the quilting cotton at Joann’s)
- Curve ruler
- Scissors
- Pins
- White thread
- Sewing Machine
- Point turner
- Pillow stuffing (I used and old pillow but you can also buy stuffing at the craft store)
- Needle with white thread
- Iron & Ironing board
Steps:
Start by pinning your white fabric quarters together and lay them down on a flat surface. Fold them in half.
Now is the time to decide how large you want your pillow. I did not use a pattern for this project, I basically just drew the shape that I like. Mark the top and the bottom of your pillow and using the curved ruler, draw in the curve of your ghost. I decided to do a scalloped edge on the bottom, each curve is 2 inches. Remember you are only drawing in half of the pillow since the fabric is folded in half. This way, when you cut it out and unfold it, you will have two whole sides to your pillow!
Cut out your ghost. Head on over to your iron and press out any wrinkles in your fabric. Line up your front and back ghosts and stitch them together using your sewing machine. My recommendation is to do a 1/4″ seam allowance. Be sure to leave 2-3″ open so you can stuff your pillow! On the curves, clip your seam allowance almost to your stitch line. This will allow you to press those curves out cleanly. Turn your pillowcase right side out and using the point turner and iron, press out your curved edges.
Now, you can go ahead and stuff your pillow. Make sure that you press the stuffing into each curve until you like the plumpness of your pillow. Using a needle and white thread, hand stitch your pillow closed. Cut out your desired eyes and mouth from the black fabric and use hot glue to attach them to your pillow!
