DIY Halloween Decor: 3D “Spooky” Sign

In yesterday’s post, I talked all about how much I love the movie Beetlejuice. When I first envisioned this project, I had a different thought in mind for it. But, when I sat down to start, I decided to go all in on my nod to Beetlejuice.

In all honesty, if I were to do this over I would have kept the letters separate to make them easier to store. I also would have added more bug shapes to give it a creepier look. But, you live and you learn and I still love the end result! You can recreate this using the word “spooky” or choose a different word for the season. Display this sign on your mantle with some lights behind it for an extra cute/spooky look!

Supplies:

  • 8″ Paper Mache Letters from Joann (Obviously whatever letters you need for the word you want to display)
  • Black and white acrylic paint
  • Ruler or straight-edge
  • pencil
  • Painters tape
  • small plastic spiders (mine were in a pack of rings I picked up from Dollar Tree)
  • Hot Glue & Hot Glue Gun

Steps:

  1. Paint your letters with the black acrylic paint. I painted all sides except the back.
  2. Use a ruler to create stripes across your letters. I made mine the width of the ruler and if the last stripe on the letter wasn’t an inch I just had the remaining inch run onto the next letter. I felt this kept the pattern continuous to the eye.
  3. Tape every other stripe across your letters.
  4. Paint the stripes using the white acrylic paint. I did two coats.
  5. When the paint is dry, carefully remove the painter’s tape. You may need to touch up some of the black paint.
  6. (Optional) Hot glue your letters together. Be sure that they are all flush with the surface they will be sitting on. For the letters K & Y I didn’t have a flat surface to glue so I cut a short piece of wood from a paint stir stick and painted it black and attached it to the bottom of the letters.
  7. Prepare your spiders. Mine were on little rings so I removed the ring portion and painted half of them black and kept the other half orange.
  8. Hot glue the spiders in various spots across your letters.
