DIY Halloween Decor: Grapevine Wreath Makeover

I have a few different Halloween-style wreaths in my decoration collection. I made this really cute spiderweb one last year out of an embroidery hoop and some spiderwebbing. A wreath is something, I think, that completes the porch decor in any season. The wreaths that I do have are quite small and look out of place on our front door. So, this year I decided to keep my eye out for a wreath that I could makeover for Halloween.

On my trip to Value Village, I noticed this grapevine wreath that was decorated for Christmas but it was only $3.99! I showed it to you in my DIY Halloween decor haul video over on YouTube. It was the perfect price and the wreath was exactly what I was looking for. I decided to give it a makeover! Continue reading to see how I put this together!

DIY Halloween Decor: Grapevine Wreath Makeover

Supplies:

  • Grapevine wreath (thrifted like mine or I did see some over at Joann’s on sale for $3.99 too!)
  • Black spray paint (I used Rustoleum Black Satin Enamel)
  • Floral picks
  • Other festive touches (I used plastic rings with Bats on them)
  • Hot Glue & Hot Glue Gun

BEFORE

Steps:

I started by removing all of the Christmas decorations from the wreath. I am saving the floral picks to add to my Christmas craft stash so I can reuse them for other projects. There was a bit of residual hot glue blobs from where some of the decor was secured and I did my best to remove as much as possible.

I took my wreath outside and spray painted it black. There are a lot of nooks and crannies so I made sure to rotate the wreath in order to coat it well. I decided I wanted a glossy look so I used the satin finish but I think a matte black would work well for this too!

While I was waiting for it to dry, I prepared all the decorations I wanted to add to it. I disassembled these floral picks I got at Joann’s. These were on sale for 60% off and I love the cute little glittery bats on them! For the little bat rings, I removed the part that goes around your finger for a few of them. I actually found that keeping the ring intact was also a great way to attach these little bats to the wreath. This pack came from Dollar Tree and included spider rings that I used for my 3D “Spooky” sign.

Time to decorate!

I started by winding the wires of the bats around different parts of the wreath. I wanted to make it look like they were flying so I manipulated them so the bats weren’t resting on the wreath. The foliage parts of the picks were inserted at different angles around the wreath. For the bats that I removed the ring bottom from, I hot glued them to the tips of the foliage to make it look like they were flying as well. For the rest of the bat rings I nestled them around the wreath, filling in different spots.

I laced a ribbon that I had in my craft supplies through a hoop on the back of the wreath and hung it on our front door.

AFTER

I love how this wreath turned out and the best part is, I can easily remove the bats and change the decorations around next year if I want!
