DIY Halloween Decor: Paper Bag Luminaries

I really enjoy decorating with lights around the holidays. Lights give off the perfect festive and cozy glow and I would keep them up all year if I could without it being weird! I love a good string of lights or cute little strings of fairy lights in different shapes or colors. But, in the last few years, I have really come to love creating luminaries. Some projects have been more involved and some are super simple but all fun to design. I made these little paper bag luminaries to line my driveway last year on Halloween night. They could not be easier to make and I have perfected my design from last year.

Supplies:

  • Paper Lunch Bags (I got mine at the Dollar Tree!)
  • White tissue paper (I also got this from the Dollar Tree!)
  • Sharpie
  • Tape or a glue stick
  • Exacto knife and scissors
  • Small piece of cardboard or a mat to protect your surface
  • Flameless Candles

Steps:

  1. Draw your design on one side of your paper bag. Choose a design like you would when carving a pumpkin!
  2. Slide your piece of cardboard inside the bag to protect your surface and ensure that you don’t cut through the back of the bag. Using the exacto knife, cut out your design. You can use scissors but I feel like an exacto knife is easier to make more precise cuts!
  3. Cut out a piece of tissue paper. I recommend making it the size of the bag or a little bit smaller than your design. Slide the tissue paper inside the bag and secure it with tape or a glue stick. Make sure it is on the side of the bag that has your design on it.
  4. When you are ready, place the flameless candles inside the bags to display!
