5 Ways I Maintain My Garden

This is a busy time out in the garden and it can get overwhelming with what seems like a neverending to-do list. It’s always been a dream of mine to have a dreamy garden and backyard. The backyard was one of the main reasons we loved this house! Once we moved in, I learned quickly that it takes lots of work to keep it looking as dreamy as I want. Today, I am sharing 5 things that I do weekly to maintain both our front and back yards!

5 Ways I Maintain My Garden

1. Take a garden walk every evening

One of my favorite times of day is when I head outside to walk through my garden. Taking a garden walk every evening allows me to watch for pests, see what vegetables need harvesting or pruning, and any other areas that must be addressed. It is such a relaxing activity and I look forward to it daily!

2. Spend some time weeding a few times a week

I used to HATE weeding. There was a time when I regretted buying a house with such a high-maintenance yard. Nowadays, I find it a calming and relaxing activity. Weeds can get out of control quickly, so I make sure that I pull them a few times a week in different parts of the yard. This makes it so I am not getting overwhelmed and feeling like I need to weed the entire yard in one day!

3. Make sure everything is well watered

This may seem like a no-brainer but sometimes it’s easy to forget to water. On my evening walks, I check the soil around my plants and water as necessary. It’s important to remember that gardens don’t need to be watered every day unless you are in a hot and dry climate. To check the soil, stick your whole finger down into it and if it’s damp all the way down at the tip of your finger, you likely do not need to water that day.

4. Dead head flowers as needed

For some flowers like cosmos and marigolds, it’s important to remove the dead blooms from the plant to encourage more blooms throughout the Summer. I also like to deadhead my poppies and peonies leaving the green part of the plant until they die back later in the season. This allows them to charge the roots ready to sprout again next Spring! Dead-heading also keeps things looking neat and tidy which is the way I love it!

5. Prune and harvest veggies as needed

Just like cosmos and marigolds, harvesting fruit off vegetables like lettuce, tomatoes, zucchini, and other herbs will encourage more growth and more veggies and herbs! I sometimes harvest for dinner and then do a larger harvest on the weekend so that I can process what we’ve grown. Vegetables are literally the fruits of your labor and I love to utilize what we can grow!
