The Simple Habit That Helps Me Feel Calmer Every Day
A few years ago, I started taking walks on my lunch breaks at work. It was during the height of the pandemic, and I was not only managing my own responsibilities but also covering another department. The stress was constant. Most days, I’d spend my lunch break glued to my phone, scrolling through YouTube or Instagram, hoping to relax—but instead, I’d return to my desk feeling even worse.
One day, I decided to do something different. Instead of sitting inside, I stepped outside for a walk. Almost instantly, I noticed a shift. The fresh air, the movement, and the change of scenery helped melt away some of the tension I’d been carrying. My mind felt clearer, and my mood lifted, even if just a little. The next day, I did it again—and again after that. Soon, walking became my favorite part of the day.
Even after I left that job, the habit stuck. Now, I walk most days—whether it’s a warm summer morning or a chilly winter one. It’s something I truly look forward to. Here are four reasons I continue to lace up my shoes and head out the door!

The Simple Habit That Helps Me Feel Calmer Every Day
Built-in “Me Time”
We’re always told to make time for ourselves, but finding that time can be tough. My daily walks are my built-in “me time.” Whether I’m listening to a podcast, an audiobook, or just enjoying the sounds of nature, it’s a chance to slow down, check in with myself, and recharge before the rest of the day begins.
Consistent Movement
Regular exercise has never come naturally to me, but walking has become an easy and enjoyable way to move my body. It doesn’t require any fancy equipment or a gym membership—just a good pair of shoes and a bit of time. It’s a small daily commitment that adds up to a big difference in how I feel physically and mentally.
A Clearer Mind
When my anxiety starts to spiral or my thoughts are racing, going for a walk is one of the best ways to calm myself down. Sometimes I leave my phone behind so I can be fully present and process whatever’s on my mind. There’s something about the rhythm of walking that helps me think more clearly and find perspective.
Time in Nature
There’s nothing quite like stepping outside first thing in the morning. The soft light, the birds singing, and the crisp air wake me up better than any cup of coffee ever could. Even just walking through my neighborhood feels grounding—I love spotting bunnies in the grass, waving to neighbors, and saying hello to the dogs out on their morning strolls. It’s a gentle reminder that there’s beauty and connection all around us.

Walking has become more than just a daily habit—it’s an act of self-care. It keeps me grounded, moving, and mindful. If you’ve been feeling stuck or overwhelmed, I can’t recommend it enough: step outside, take a deep breath, and go for a walk. You might be surprised by how much better you feel when you come back.

I loved it when we would walk together at work. 🙂 Even before the pandemic, work was way way too stressful and walking was also my favorite part/s of the work day.
I try to get the dogs and Jackson out daily for a walk especially now that I’m not working. It doesn’t always happen, but it really does make a difference on my mental health. Even little things can make a big difference! 💛
