12 Vegetables & Herbs to Plant Now for a Fall Crop
I’ve written a lot about Spring and Summer gardening. Usually when October rolls around I am ready to put the garden to bed. This year though, I am going to try to get a Fall crop of a few of my favorite Fall/Winter veggies. I’ve heard that Fall gardening isn’t as intensive as Spring and Summer gardening. The plants are hardy and with the cooler weather, the pests aren’t as terrible.
When I was looking into what I could grow, I was pleasantly surprised to learn how many things could be started mid-summer and transplanted in late Summer with enough time to get some Fall/early Winter harvests! So, if you’re considering starting a Fall garden, here are 12 herbs and vegetables you can plant now for a Fall crop!

When to Start Seeds
For vegetables that take longer to harvest, it is recommended to start those indoors in July for zone 8b. I will be starting mine this week and hopefully, they will be ready to transplant by the end of August/early September. There are some seeds, however, that you can direct sow starting at the beginning of August that will be ready to harvest by the end of Summer/early Fall!
What to Grow in for Fall:
- Kale (Direct Sow)
- Lettuce (Direct Sow)
- Cilantro (Direct Sow)
- Kohlrabi (Direct Sow or Start Indoors)
- Green Onions (Direct Sow)
- Cabbage (Start Indoors)
- Cauliflower (Start Indoors)
- Broccoli (Start Indoors)
- Brussels Sprouts (Start Indoors)
- Radish (Direct Sow)
- Spinach (Direct Sow)
- Arugula (Direct Sow)
What I Plan on Growing for Fall:
Since this will be my first Fall garden, I am starting small with veggies that I know we love! I also will be transplanting some of these into a garden that will still be full of Summer veg so I need to take how much space I will have into account.
- Kale
- Radish
- Lettuce
- Broccoli
- Cabbage
