DIY Decor: Bird Silhouette Picture Frames

Today’s project is very “Edgar Allen Poe-esque.” I was scrolling on Pinterest when something similar and fell in LOVE with the idea! The example on Pinterest was a larger version, but I like making more of the smaller versions. These were so simple to make and budget-friendly! You can do this project in an afternoon and they create such impact when paired with your other decorations.

DIY Decor: Bird Silhouette Picture Frames

Supplies:

  • Picture Frames (I got mine from the Dollar Tree) I used a 5×7 and a 4×6 and a curved frame
  • Black Matte Spray Paint (Here) *Optional
  • Clear Coat Sealer (Flat or Satin) *Optional
  • Fine Tip Paint Pen or Sharpie
  • Black Acrylic Paint (Here)
  • Small detail paintbrush
  • Hot glue and hot glue gun
  • Bird Silhouette stencils (The file below are the ones I used)

Method:

  1. Remove the backing and the glass. Give the glass a good clean. Remove any fasteners that hold the backing in. These are super easy to remove on the Dollar Tree frames with some needle nose pliers.
  2. This step is optional but I wanted to make my frames more matte so I spray painted them with some black matte spray paint and then used a clear coat sealer.
  3. Place the glass over the silhouette stencil you’re going to use. Trace the shape using your fine-tip paint pen or Sharpie marker.
  4. Using the small detail brush and black acrylic paint, fill in the outline. This step took me a few coats. Make sure the coat before is completely dry before adding the next or you will smudge the previous coat. For the last coat, I found it easier to hold the glass up and fill in any spots that weren’t solid black already.
  5. Once the paint is dry, place the glass back in the frame and hot glue it in place.

I added picture hangers to the backs of my frames so I could hang these on the wall so I could keep the background clear. These would also look great with a white background! Just place a piece of white paper behind the glass and reattach the backs of the picture frames. This would make it super easy to display on mantles, tables, or a tiered tray!

I’ve got lots more fun DIY’s coming up this month and I hope you’ll follow along! If you liked this project, I would love it if you shared it with someone you know would like it too! And, if you recreate it, I would love it if you tagged me so I can see your creation! You can check out previous Blogtober posts here.
