DIY Decor: Jack-O-Lantern String Art

A few years ago I did a string art project for Christmas where I made a Christmas tree! I didn’t share it here on the blog but it turned out so lovely and I love taking it out every year when I decorate! This year I thought it would be fun to do another string art project but make it Halloween! I used a spare piece of wood we had lying around but admittedly I would have used a thicker piece if I did another project like this in the future! It’s a relatively easy project to do. The only tedious part is hammering in the nails. I think it turned out so cute! Check out the details below!

DIY Decor: Jack-O-Lantern String Art

Supplies:

  • Piece of wood, mine is 10″x 11″, I recommend a thicker piece of wood for this project.
  • Orange Acrylic Paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Mini nails (Mine are called Escutcheon Pins and I got them at Home Depot. They are 3/4″ long and you don’t want your nails to be too long.)
  • Hammer
  • Black Crochet Thread (Here)

Method:

  1. Paint your wood with the orange acrylic paint. I did two coats over the board. Let it dry completely.
  2. Map out your face shapes. I used a ruler and a pencil to mark my Jack-O-Lantern face out on the board.
  3. Hammer in your nails at different points of each face shape making sure you don’t hammer them all the way through, you want them to be sticking up a bit. I like to start at all the corners and then add what nails I think I’ll need in between. The more nails you add, the more detailed your string design will be.
  4. Tie a knot with the crochet thread around one of the nails. Start wrapping around each nail to make an outline of your shape and then start wrapping in random designs around the nails in the shape. Once it looks the way you want, secure the end around one of the nails. Repeat until each face shape is filled in and looks the way you want it.

I’ve got lots more fun DIY’s coming up this month and I hope you’ll follow along! If you liked this project, I would love it if you shared it with someone you know would like it too! And, if you recreate it, I would love it if you tagged me so I can see your creation! You can check out previous Blogtober posts here.
