How to Make Herb Salt

Herbs have been a staple in my garden ever since I was able to start growing on my own! Whenever someone asks me what they should grow, I always recommend fresh herbs. They are easy and perfect for any level of gardener. I love to cook with them, and this year I have been focusing a lot on preserving them in different ways so I can continue to use them after Summer has gone! Today’s project, in my opinion, is one of the easiest ways to do it!

Herb salt is so versatile in your kitchen. You can use one herb per salt concoction or make your own blend. The possibilities are endless, and how lovely would it be to gift something that you’ve made from ingredients in your garden?! It’s so simple to make and I would encourage you to get as creative with your flavors as you wish!

How to Make Herb Salt

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb of coarse sea salt or kosher salt
  • A handful or two of your desired herbs (I used garlic chives & Oregano)

Method:

  • Combine the salt and herbs into a food processor. Blitz until the herbs have been pulverized down into tiny pieces.
  • Empty the salt mixture out onto a rimmed baking sheet, spread it out into an even layer across the sheet.
  • Allow to dry completely overnight. *Note* If you don’t allow it to dry before adding it to your jar it can turn cement-like like making it more difficult to use.
  • Add to your desired airtight jar or container and use as you would in your everyday cooking!

Flavor combination ideas:

  • Basil & Dill
  • Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, & Thyme
  • Cilantro & Lemon Thyme
  • Savory, Rosemary, & Thyme
  • Italian Seasoning Blend: Basil, Thyme, Marjoram, Parsley, Oregano, Red Pepper Flakes, & Garlic Powder
