DIY Decor: Simple Wooden Candy Corns
One of my favorite decorations I made back in 2023 were these styrofoam candy corn cones. My decor aesthetic is definitely more cutesy and spooky this time of year, and I just think candy corn decor is the cutest! These cones inspired this project that I made from some leftover cedar fence panels we had. In fact, I had most of the supplies on hand for this project, but even if you didn’t, they are actually very affordable to make. I hope you give this one a try and let me know what you think!

DIY Decor: Simple Wooden Candy Corns
Admittedly, I had a little bit of difficulty with the fence panels splitting at the bottom of my triangles so if you are trying this at home, I would either purchase wooden triangles already cut out (I ordered these on Etsy) or use a different or better saw than the one I inherited from my dad. But, I was able to use my miter box and saw to cut the bases nicely!
Supplies:
- Triangles cut from wood (Mine are from cedar fencing panels, and my triangles are about 6 3/4″ tall and as wide as the fence panel)
- Jigsaw or Tablesaw for cutting (if needed)
- 2 1/2″ wide & 1/2″ thick hobby wood for the bases. Cut the length to match the width of the base of your triangles
- Mitre Box & Saw for cutting the bases (optional, could also use a regular saw like the ones above)
- Sandpaper
- Acrylic paint in white, yellow, and orange
- Antiquing Medium (Mine is in the shade Nutmeg from FolkArt, this color from Michaels looks great too!)
- 1 1/4″ flathead screws
- Drill
- Ruler
- Clear Coat sealer (optional)
Method:
- Start by measuring out triangles to your desired height and width. For my triangles, their height is about 6 3/4″ and I just made the base as wide as my fence panel. Using a saw, cut out your triangles.
- Measure out your base width to match the base witdth of the triangles. Using a mitre box and saw or a regular saw, cut your bases to their desired width.
- Sand your triangles to smooth both the edges and the wood grain. You can also sand the bases but I chose to leave mine.
- Measure out how wide you want each color panel to be on your triangle. I started from the bottom, measuring 2 inches for the yellow and orange stripes and the white was whatever width was left.
- Paint each section of your candy corn. I applied 2 coats of each color. Allow to dry completely.
- Apply the antiquing medium to the bases. I applied one coat and then wiped it off using a paper towel. Allow to dry completely.
- Measure to the center point on your base and the base of the triangle. This is where you will use a drill and drill bit to drill a hole into both. This will prevent the base and the fence panel from cracking when drilling your screws in.
- Using a drill with a screw attachment, drill your screws through the base so that the screw head is on the bottom of the base and the part with the threads is sticking up on the top. Line up the hole that you drilled into the triangle with the screw threads and twist to secure.
- Apply clear coat if desired.

Let’s be friends!
