DIY Decor: Wooden Witch Hat
I have loved getting more into wooden festive decorations in the last few years. They are more substantial and will last a lot longer than other projects I have done and already thrown away. The triangle for this project is one that I had originally cut out for a Christmas decoration, but didn’t end up using. It’s imperfect, and I knew it would make the perfect witch hat! I love how interchangeable the decoration on the witch hat is, too. You can switch it up every year! Check out how I made this cute new decoration below!

DIY Decor: Wooden Witch Hat
Supplies & Tools:
- Fence panel
- Thin piece of hobby wood
- Fall or Halloween-themed floral picks
- Natural raffia
- Black acrylic paint
- Finishing nails
- Paintbrush
- Hot glue gun & glue (optional)
- Safety glasses
- Jigsaw
- Sand paper
- Hammer
Method:
- From the fence panel, cut out a rectangle for the top of your witch hat. Mine is about 10″ tall.
- On the thin piece of hobby wood, draw the shape that you want for the brim of your witch hat. Then, using the jigsaw, carefully cut out that shape.
- Using sandpaper, sand all the rough edges of both the brim and the triangle part of your hat. Wipe off the dust thoroughly once you’re finished.
- Paint both pieces with black acrylic paint. I did 3 coats for each piece. Allow to dry completely between each coat.
- Using the finishing nails, attach the triangle to the brim of the hat. I eyeballed the placement with this. I created a contraption with some pieces of 2x4s and some clamps to hold the triangle upright and laid the brim on top. I then carefully hammered 3 finishing nails into the base of the triangle from the bottom side of the brim piece, starting with the middle. This way, if you want to adjust or pivot the triangle, you can a little.
- Tie pieces of the raffia to the base of the hat. You can also secure this with hot glue on the back but I found tying it easy as well.
- Using your floral picks, decorate the base of your hat. I did one side, but I also think it would look cute all the way across the base. You can secure these with hot glue as well but I was able to tuck my pieces into the raffia easily.

Let’s be friends!
