DIY Decor: 3D Ghost Frame

One of my favorite Halloween “characters” to create is little ghosts! In fact, this is the 4th ghost-themed project this blogtober! This was inspired by a Pinterest post I saw while doing some inspiration research when I was planning this year’s projects! I love the antiqued look of this project, and it would be so much fun to create multiple so you could make a little gallery wall of ghosts! Check out the details below for how to make this adorable project!

DIY Decor: 3D Ghost Frame

Supplies:

  • Picture Frame with the glass removed (I thrifted mine)
  • White Paper (for your background)
  • White Tissue paper
  • Mod Podge (Here)
  • White, Black, Tan acrylic paint
  • Paint brush
  • Sponge

Method:

  1. To the back of the picture frame, glue a piece of white paper to the side that sits forward in the frame, not the side with the hangers on it.
  2. Once that glue has dried, take your tissue paper and start shaping it into a rounded edge; this will be the “head” of your ghost. With your paintbrush, put a layer of Mod Podge directly onto your background where you want the top of your ghost to lay. Lay down the rounded part of your tissue paper and then begin brushing more Mod Podge onto the top of the tissue paper.
  3. Continue brushing Mod Podge underneath the tissue paper and laying the tissue paper on top until you’ve reached the bottom. It takes a bit of finessing and don’t be afraid to move the tissue around to lay in different ways. There is no perfect way to do this! You should also have excess at the bottom. I also took some additional pieces of tissue and added them over the initial tissue ghost to add a pit of volume to the bottom of the ghost. Once the rest of your tissue paper is laid down, brush a layer of Mod Podge on the top of it. Allow to dry completely.
  4. Paint a coat of white paint on the background and over your tissue ghost. You don’t need to be super thorough over the tissue. I kind of dry-brushed the white over the tissue ghost. Allow to dry.
  5. Wet your sponge (be sure to ring out excess water), blot the tan acrylic paint over the background and the ghost. I mixed my tan paint with some metallic acrylic paint to give it a kind of sheen! Allow to dry completely. Be sure to blot the excess at the bottom too!
  6. Paint your eyes on your ghost. I also dry-brushed a bit of the black over the ridges of the tissue ghost so that it stood out from the background and also looked a bit more distressed. Allow to dry.
  7. While the ghost is drying, I took my sponge and watered down some of my black paint and added a bit of distressing to the picture frame as well. Allow that to dry.
  8. Insert the tissue ghost and background back into the frame and secure, making sure that the excess at the bottom goes through the frame and hangs over the front of the frame. This gives the 3D look we are going for!
