Gardening Jobs for November

As autumn gives way to winter, November brings a quieter rhythm to the garden — but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to do. This month is all about preparation and protection: tidying up the last of the fallen leaves, planting spring bulbs, and getting the soil ready for the colder months ahead. With the right care now, you’ll set the stage for a healthy, vibrant garden when spring returns. Whether you’re tending to flower beds or refreshing your compost, November’s garden tasks are all about nurturing what’s to come. Here are some gardening jobs for November!

Gardening Jobs for November

Feed your soil & mulch

Now is the time to amend your soil to get it ready to sit over Winter. Common amendments include compost, worm castings, aged manure, and shredded leaves. This organic material will break down over Winter to enrich the soil. You can also test your soil to determine any specific needs. Adding mulch on top will protect the soil structure and feed the microbes.

Protect any mature crops that are still out in the garden

If you planted any Fall crops, now is the time to protect them from the elements. Mulching can help with this but you can also cover winter salad leaves with a cold frame or cloches. If you have any hardy brassicas planted, be sure to cover them with netting to protect them from birds and other pests that may decide to make them into a meal!

Last chance to plant garlic

Be sure to make time to get your garlic planted if you haven’t already! Make sure to cover with mulch or landscaping fleece to protect it over winter. You can also plant out onions and shallots.

Thin any root crops you planted in early Fall

If you planted out root crops in early Fall, now is the time to thin them out. Give them all the extra room they will need to grow and you will get a beautiful crop of root veg!

Dig up Dhalia tubers

After the foliage dies back in early November, get out and dig up any Dahlia tubers. Be sure to brush the dirt off and store in a cool dry place like an unheated garage over Winter.

Cut back foliage on strawberries

Now is the time to clean up your strawberry plants by cutting back all of the foliage. I also remove any runners and lingering fruit that may still be on the plants.

Rake the leaves

Now is a great time to rake leaves. You can use them in your compost, use them to make leaf mold, or use them to mulch your garden.
