DIY Decor: Textured Ghost Art
Earlier in the Summer (yes, I said Summer), I went on a trip to Michael’s to get a few things for a Summer project, and to my surprise (not really), they had some of their Halloween stuff out! I had to make a lap and browse their selection, and I spotted this adorable ghost art with little textured ghosts on a black canvas. I then looked at the price and was shocked to see $70! Buying decorations from Michael’s used to bring me so much joy, but that price tag just wasn’t in the budget. I love a good ghost decoration, so I decided to take inspiration and make it myself! Today, I am going to share with you how easy it is to make!

DIY Decor: Textured Ghost Art
When I went to Home Depot to buy the spackle for this project, they had a large variety of spackles to buy. I bought a large bucket of just regular spackle, but in reality, I could have done the same with a much smaller amount. It was a good deal, though, so if you are looking to make multiples of this piece, the larger bucket is the way to go! I would also recommend looking for a quick-drying one, as mine took quite a while to dry.
You can buy a canvas that is already black, but I had a white one on hand and some black acrylic paint, so that’s what I used. You can’t go wrong with this project; the spackle was easy to work with and you really cannot mess it up!
Supplies:
- Spackle (quick drying is best)
- Canvas (black or white)
- Black Acrylic Paint
- Cardboard
- Paintbrush
Method:
- If needed, paint your canvas black. I did two coats. Allow to dry completely.
- Cut out little ghost shapes in different sizes from the cardboard.
- Starting with the largest ghost shape, take a blob of spackle and place it in the middle of the canvas, then drag it down to create an individual, textured ghost. Repeat alternating between different sizes of ghost shapes and layering each ghost until the bottom half of the canvas is filled in.
- Allow the spackle to dry completely. I let mine sit overnight, but if you have quick-drying, it should take much less time.
- Once the spackle is dry, use a small paintbrush and some black acrylic paint to add eyes to each ghost. Let the eyes dry completely. And that’s it!
